Mary Albertus Bain

This book covers the whole history of the pearling industry in and around Australia from the 19th century beginnings in Torres Strait to the boom days at Broome, known in those days as the Queen City of the North. Particular attention has been paid to the Japanese workers and investors and the Japanese government’s negotiations for fair treatment of their nationals. Broome was a world apart from Australia – wealthy pearlers and socialite wives, oriental night clubs, Asiatic beauties, Sikhs, European buyers, and behind the scenes financial manoeuvres. Two world wars destroyed that world but the whole colourful world is recreated in this detailed and thoroughly researched book.
