William Beebe (1877-1962) was an American naturalist, ornithologist, marine biologist, entomologist and explorer. He successfully combined scientific writing for technical journals with popular articles and books. The author gives a vivid account of Beebe from his boyhood fascination with birds, his travels and his daring descents with Otis Barton in the famous bathysphere.
