Suffer and Survive, by Martyn Goodman

Suffer and Survive, Gas attacks, Miner’s canaries, spacesuits and the Bends: The extreme life of Dr J S Haldane
Martyn Goodman

JohnScott Haldane, a Scottish aristocrat whose family motto was ‘suffer’, gulped down cocktails of toxic gas to learn what poisoned miners, introduced canaries to mines as a way of testing the toxicity of air. A non-swimmer, he jumped overboard in a full diving suit to solve the problem of the bends. And as German scientists released poison gas in the First World War, he breathed mixtures of deadly substances to find out what the enemy was using then gassed himself (and even his son) to devise the first gas mask. this book is a fascinating and thought-provoking account of a remarkable man and his family.
