The Frogmen
Tom Waldron & James Gleeson
The Italians were the first to use frogmen and two-men torpedoes operating against British shipping in the Mediterranean. British countermeasures were immediately started and the \admiralty organised an Experimental Diving Unit with volunteers as human guinea pigs. Midget submarines were soon operating against the German battleship Tirpitz and they played an important part in the Normandy Landings on D-Day. they were also in action in the Far East, most notably sinking the Japanese cruiser XE3 for which two Victoria Crosses were awarded.
