Interesting Particulars of the Loss of the Admiral Gardner and Britannia….and of The Apollo … on the Goodwin Sands …, 1809. Also the loss of the Russian ship, St Peter.

The Admiral Gardner and the Britannia  were East Indiamen that were wrecked on the Goodwin Sands in 1809.  The former was carrying anchors, iron bars and approx. 50 tons of newly minted copper coins. The rediscovery of the wreck in 1984 yielded millions of well-preserved copper coins. The Britannia was carrying a valuable cargo including silver tokens. The Apollo was a brig that foundered on the Goodwin Sands in the same storm; only one of the crew of 20 men survived.

The St Peter was wrecked on what is now called Bering Island in the Kamchatka sea. The surviving crew  members eventually escaped but were smitten with severe hardship and scurvy.
