The author has extracted material from Pepys’ diary which deal with naval affairs and together with other contemporary sources has constructed the day-to-day administration of the fleet to which Pepys devoted his life. Ships and their designers, timber, masts and rigging, dockyard, crews, hospitals, victualling and pay, artillery – indeed the whole complex is told very largely in Pepys’ own words.
